My Best Friend by Sarah Buehler
We have all heard the term “man’s best friend” used to describe the special relationship between a person and their dog. I never truly understood that saying until the day I met my best friend Shelby. My boyfriend was working at his barber shop one day, when he saw a small dog running through the streets. Scared that she would get hit by a car, he brought her inside. It was obvious that she had been abandoned. She was scared, filthy, hungry, and did not have a collar on. He gave her the sandwich he had for his lunch and she quickly gobbled it up. For the rest of the day she waited patiently right at his feet as he worked, and he fell in love with the sweet puppy instantly. When he brought her home that evening I was apprehensive and a little irritated. We had never even discussed getting a pet, and had just moved in together in a new apartment only a month before. I thought about all the money we would have to put down on a pet deposit and how I would now be partially responsible for taking care of this dog. As I sat back on the couch, now extremely irritated, she jumped up on my lap. We looked at each other and in a matter of minutes all of those worries washed away. Those big brown eyes were so sweet and trusting, and I knew that she had found a home. It has been three years since that day, and I can’t imagine life without her. She is always there for me, no matter what I look like or how I feel. When I am sad she curls up into my lap and nuzzles me as if to say that she is there for me. She is always happy to see me. That kind of unconditional love is hard to find, and there are so many dogs waiting to be rescued and loved back. They give so much more than they take. Please check out this link and maybe you will meet your new best friend.

Wow, Sarah that was a great story. I want to run right out and get my own little puppy, well almost. Getting a pet is a big commitment, but it has worked out for you. She is precious. Jackie Sullivan
ReplyDeleteThank you! It is a big commitment, but is so rewarding. I was nervous about it at first too, but it has been so amazing. She is family now. I think I really lucked out though, because she is a really calm dog. She likes to cuddle and is quiet and has never once messed up anything in my apartment. Maybe it's her breed. She is a Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix.
ReplyDeleteGood job on the blog! I guess as the cliche saying goes, a third times a charm, because the dog I have now (lola) is most definitely the mens best friend type.

Truely, dogs are man's best friend with unconditional love and affection compared to that of fellow human beings.
ReplyDeleteThe dogs is a little bit painful topic for me, because I`ve lost recently my dog. And I'm not going to be unique if I say that dogs are men`s best friend and companion, they are part of family.
ReplyDeleteYana, I am so sorry for your loss. I agree, they are family. I would be lost without my baby girl, and I hope that one day, when you are ready, you will find another dog that you can give love to and make part of your family. Again, I am so sorry that you are having to go through this pain. I will say prayers for you.
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story. We have 4 dogs, and they are just as much a part of our family as any human. My kids even refer to them as their brothers and sisters. They provide us with so much joy and entertainment, and I know what you mean by them always being there for you. Three of ours are rescues from the pound, and they were all on death row when we adopted them. I think they know what we saved them from and are the best dogs we could ask for.

Harold, thank you. That is so awesome that you rescued your dogs from death. It is such an amazing feeling. I think that they understand it too and that is why they love us so much. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet blog! I can really relate to your story. People who want pets should really look at shelters etc before going to pet shops because there are many animals out there in need. I am not a real animal person but my daughter brought home a lost puppy around a year ago and I feel head over heels and he has been a special part of our family ever since!
ReplyDeleteWow, What a neat story. My kids are always trying to being home strays and it's so hard for me to say no. Our dogs are a part of our family and we cherish our time with them.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautifully written story, Sarah! This was a really sentimental read, really beautiful. This story, I feel, is relateable for many people, because a lot of people are apprehensive towards adoption, fostering and rescuing. Your story is very inspiring, and persuaded me to look into rescuing an animal.
ReplyDeleteGreat story I actually have a pet of my own Guido he is definitely always there for me, I enjoy walking him which also gives me an excuse to walk around and think about my life when I'm going through tough situation.
